When the time comes to say what you haven’t said, be honest. But before you speak, know that how you speak this truth is directly tied to what you’re going to reap from the situation. Because how you choose to express this truth is a direct reflection of how confident you are in your efforts and experiences to this point.
A Little Guidance
While people may not like what you have to say in this moment, choose words which will build trust. Take the time to explain your truth, don’t just proclaim it.
Show people the value of your truth so they can see that your truth is not an opinion or a petty judgement. Your truth is based on experience. After the initial sting of your carefully worded truth wears off, what will remain is trust. People will know that they can rely on you for honest guidance. People will trust you. And that is a true gift not to be mishandled.
Your Ego is Still Here
But remember this. It’s important that you choose the words of your honesty carefully. You want your words to build trust. Not drag people down to show them how much more you know, how right you feel, or to admonish them. Avoid bolstering yourself by feeding your ego’s insecurities by using your truth to pass judgement or find humor in another’s misfortune.
People may know that you’re being honest, but they won’t want to turn to you when they need honesty. If you find yourself doing this, you may want to hold off a little longer before speaking.
